Ford hybrid cars

Ford Motor Company bought a license for a Japanese construction technology of hybrid cars, for the first time realized in the model Toyota Prius, and in 2004 released Ford Hybrid Escape, first serial car with petrol and electric motor to the U.S. market.

Ford planned to start production of a new hybrid car. Auxiliary power unit will be hydraulic Instead of traditional electric type. The peculiarity of the car is a patented system (Hydraulic Launch Assist), first tested in 2002 on an experimental model F-350 Tonka truck. The principle of the system is based on using long-known hydraulic accumulators.

In traditional hybrid cars energy allocated under braking is converted into electric current and stockpiled in batteries. When starting or accelerating these batteries are fed motor, which complements the traditional internal combustion engine. The system makes possible to avoid converting mechanical energy into electrical and related losses.

F-150 hybrid has special pump wich while braking pumps liquid in the tank-box, compressing gas located there. When starting, when the stored energy should be used, gas expands, sending the liquid back to the pump. It, in turn, becomes a hydraulic motor that drives the wheels.
